Okay, just was given the first audio related piece of my HT setup today. A nakamichi av-8.
right now its just running a couple "curtis" speakers from a boombox... i will be using them as temporary rears until i get something better. anyhoo, my plan for the fronts is to use a pair of "Focal 130CA" speakers that i have in my closet. They are 4ohm so the receiver should power them quite nicely, and if I remember correctly they sounded pretty nice in my car. However, I am unsure how to proceed for building boxes for them. The specs on their website don't have any detailed information. I searched around this site and it seems like the recommendation is to do an IB configuration for car speakers... on the other hand I've heard that they will sound nice if i put them in small boxes. I could send focal a letter asking for the specs, but in the meantime I am curious to hear your guys' suggestions for enclosures. |

Plenty of info on the current 130 CA1 here. Should give you an idea of what to expect..
http://www.focal-fr.com/catalogue-do...files/1214.pdf http://www.focal-fr.com/catalogue-fr...&idProduit=112 These 5" coaxials, manufactured by Focal, were primarily designed for installation in the factory locations of a vehicle, or an infinite baffle arrangement, while taking cabin gain of a car's small interior into consideration. As with many drivers geared toward the mobile market, both Fs (resonant frequency) and Qts are quite high. Aside from that, both on and off axis frequency response is pretty terrible. There are plenty of other reasons not to continue with these plans as well. With that said, I believe that any attempt to put this driver in an enclosure for use in the home will only end up resulting in a waste of your time. Apologies if that seemed a little blunt, but that's really just the way it is. |
