Default Best speakers under $500

Hi all,

I'm pretty much an amp person but was looking into getting some nice speakers for the amps I have and future ones I intend to build. They are for the most part tube amps, so I was looking for something 90dB+. Right now, I'm aiming for some used klipsch heresy's on ebay or wherever else, but I was wondering if there is something better out there that can be had for about the same price range.

appreciate the input

Mostly we know about diy speakers here...

I've not been impressed by any of the Klipsch. If they sell for $500 you should be able to build something better for $100-150.

What kind of tube amps?

Default too many to comment on, for DIY

but as Dave said, many that can chew on any Klipsch in the $500 range (new).

Many fullrangers can achieve better sound. Again as dave asked, what kinda tube amps with how much juice?

Also your needs will be dictated to the size of room and the style of music you play, and at what level?

The tube amps I have now are both about 20W/chan push-pull, I don't have any low power SE gear as of yet, and aren't looking at any in the future.

Only problem with building something is I don't have the tools and workspace available for that, as I live in a apartment now...

My room size is about 15' x 20', carpeted.

edit: I also listen to pretty much everything...

Hi Boris

Sorry, I've no experience with any commercial speakers.

But I can tell you, that for $300 in total, a homemade pair of Metronomes with Hemp FR8's is unbelievable. I heard them this weekend, up against a lot of other amazing speakers, and they were simply the best. They are amazingly simple to build, and attractive. Look them up on this website...

Good luck

What you should consider then is scooping up someone else' DIY (you know that once started they can't just build one) or get someone to cut you out a flat-pak that can be assembled on the kitchen table.

At that price, with that big a box, and that many drivers, i am afraid you might well find yourself with some whote van speakers... i hope that thot turns out wrong. Do let us know how they perform, what the drivers look like from the back side, and how well made the box is when you get them.
