Iam planning to build a 3 way active studio monitor.
I am planning as the following... tweeter >> SS 9700 ( 3000+ Hz) midrange>> SS KEVLAR MIDRANGE 13M8636 (400-3000Hz) Woofer >> vifa PL 26WR09 4ohm( < 400Hz) amps> 2 LM3886( parallel ) for tweeter 2 LM3886( parallel ) for midrange 4 LM3886( parallel ) for woofer preamp and active crossovers with LM4562 any suggestions my friends? |

Is this monitor going to be a real studio monitor for recording purposes?

Are you already familiar with speaker building?
Here are my thoughts on what helped me: 1.) I would go for constant directivity, since waveguides are really hard to build for DIY. If I had the possibility, I would go for an inwall or "almost-inwall" (flat box mounted at the wall) speaker. However, results will only be good, when you can sit in the or at the reverbradius of your room. 2.) alternative: if speakers can be placed into the room, I would consider to built a true dipole strongly. Due to the radiation pattern, you will gain a factor of 1.83 for your listening distance. However, edge reflection will become a problem. For the driver selection: In case of 1.): almost all cones tend to break up significantly at frequencies 1.5 times their cricumference resulting in possible audible "horn" artefacts and an increased directivity, therefore, in order to cross higher M to T, I would either use a smaller midrange cone or a 3'' midrange dome. Although it is not popular, but for a constant directivity, do not cross a 10cm mid or a 3'' dome higher than 2500. The midrange will most likely be the most important driver for your "color" and neutrality. I would see not point using the scanspeak tweeter. You do not need a driver with low crossover potential. I would strongly consider the peerless hds driver. In case of 2.): I haven't completely thought through that... ![]() Have fun ![]() Leif |
