What woofers are people mating these with?
I'm looking for open baffle woofer recommendations. Thanks! C |

So....
Last night I put one of the Audax mids into a 17" test baffle and ran it full range to compare it to the sealed Jordan JX-92 satellites that I usually have going. What a difference! The paper cone Audax mids have a really beautiful sound. I A/B'd them for my wife and she said the Jordan was like listening to acid. (Not on acid...like pouring it on your ears.) I have always thoroughly enjoyed my Jordan based monitors and felt fully justified after building them to sell my Sonus Faber Electa Amators because they were much better sounding. I couldn't stop playing records and it has been a while since I felt that way. In any event, I'm looking for OB woofers to pair with this fantastic mid and am considering the JBL 123-A, the Peerless SLS 315, and anything else anyone wants to recommend in a configuration similar to the Jamo R909. Thanks! C |

Eminence Alpha 15 with its unusually high Qts is very successful for open baffle applications. Cheap also. 2X will be great.

I'm curious if the Eminence has sound quality to match the Audax from anyone who has used them?
Thanks, C |

Hi,
if the Eminence does not have the sound quality, then roll it off near 120Hz and let the Audax do the majority of the work. But try an active crossover as high as 400Hz to hear what the integration sounds like. DCX could do this so easily. Then build a discrete crossover to match the final required crossover. How high does the Audax go? Does it need 3kHz or 4kHz roll-off to clean up the treble? I doubt it can get above 5kHz cleanly. My carbon coned hm130co goes to 6kHz (passive roll-off), but I think that was stretching it too far.

Andrew,
You cannot cross the Audax that low as the fs=117hz and it only has an xmax of .5mm. Yes, one half of a millimeter! It would need to be between 4-500hz to work correctly which is why it is imperative to have something that matches quite well. Thanks though! C p.s. Hi,
but you just used it wideband without any filtering and said it had Quote:
Yes, it is a genuine mid range driver, but remove the bass and it will give a good account of itself. Just not 120db of SPL.

The Audax will do ok with 300Hz 24dB. Then again its difficult to find high Qts high class woofers to experiment with. The Alpha 15 is a cheap experiment. Under 300Hz our aural perception seriously goofs out.

I didn't bother to try to cobble up a filter. I wanted to hear the driver in its unfettered glory or lack thereof, to see if I wanted to proceed with a full design. If the mid wasn't happening, time to sell and do something else. I think all drivers have an overall character (read coloration) and you either like it or you don't. I wanted to compare the character of the Jordan to the Audax and the unfiltered Audax came out on top.
I know the JBL 123-A is OLD. The measurements on Troels' site are encouraging, it has a Qts of ~.5 and an Fs of 25. Just a thought, C |

Don't forget the huge dynamic gap between the Audax and the Jordan. Only that can make any well executed driver preferable to a low sens one, even if the quiet fellow is more correct in its confined dynamic range. The JBL is good for sure. Anyway, whatever you are going to use for OB bass, better select no lower than Qts 0.5 . It will help you avoid excess bass EQ and over excursions.
