Hi,
Recently almost by coincident I became happy owner of Scan Speak 9700 tweeter..;-)) I would like to build monitors around 20L in close cabinet or reasonable small vented monitors with Peerless HDS 205 EXCLUSIVE (P830884). I wonder if this set will work well together an will be ease to drive by parallel single ended amplifier based on EL34 tubes..(high efficiency is not a problem because I do not play music loud but transparency, stereo, sound stage and vocals this is my primary concern.. Any suggestions more than welcome ..;-)) Regards, Art |

The HDS 205 is very easy to work with and it has a very smooth response. It sounds very good indeed. I am sure it mates very well with the 9700. Given that the HDS 205 is only a 5 1/2" driver it does not go low so I guess I would use two of them in a MTM. More sensitivity is needed if driven by a tube amp.

Also try a series XO on the HDS 205 and it can sound absolutely first class. I have 8 x HDS 205 drivers sitting around and someday I will follow your path and build some speakers dedicated to tube amps.

However I don't think it matters too much as per say. Make sure you crossover at around 2000hz with steep filters and you'll be okay. As 8 inchers go this one has quite a well extended response, especially off axis, but this is skewed somwhat when you notice the on axis rises with frequency. I currently use the same tweeter and think it sounds fantastic, should mate well, with how tubes are supposed to sound. Measurements are a must though, as they always are.

Oop! we have some confusions here.
The HDS 205 is 850490, not 830884, I suppose. This one is 8". And 850488 is HDS 134. This one is 5". I have 8 x 850490 and 8 x 850488 on hands and have lived with them for a couple of years. I tried a series XO on the 850488 and it sounded fabulous. Yes, measurement is important to get them to work at their potentials. I found the 850490 limited in low bass. |
