I am a long-time lurker of this forum, but I have finally managed to find the time and budget to put together a decent DIY audio system. I have gotten a ton of information from this and other forums, but I have been having trouble putting everything together since most discussions only deal with a certain component or are over my head.
I have recently put together a gainclone which I will be using to run the woofer and tweeter, and I planned to build a passive crossover for them. This is what I had in mind based on reviews and comments: woofer: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=295-370 or http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=264-850 tweeter: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=264-835 If a full-range driver is better for my application, I am open for suggestions in that area as well. I am worried whether the gainclone will have enough power for options I listed or if I should go with a more sensitive driver. The subwoofer setup, more specifically the subwoofer amp, I am more up in the air about. Are there any good beginner DIY options for a sub amp out there, or should I be looking for an off-the-shelf 100W amp. This is what I was looking at getting for a sub:http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=264-833 but I am open for suggestions. Some additional notes: - size is not an issue, I can go bigger if it is better - my budget (excluding gainclone) is about $300, but I would bump that up if is REALLY necessary. - I have the tools and workshop to do all necessary woodworking - I am very new to the diy and home audio scene. I understand most of the concepts from reading this and other sites, but my practical knowledge is almost non-existant. - This setup will be used for both listening to music and as a home theater set-up. Mods, if there is a better section for this post, feel free to move it. |

Are you able to take measurements of the drivers in the speaker box? If you can't I would try to find an established design on the web and just build that.
If you do design your own speaker those TB W4-704's are an excellent choice. Should be very easy to work with for a first timer. Not so sure about the tweeter though, I think you can do better than those. That TB sub is really cool...but I wonder if there is a better option for the money. Maybe the 10" Mach5 Audio with a plate amp? I think the sub will push your project over $300 even with a cheap option. |

Would something like this be better for the tweeter:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=264-524 I am a little worried on whether my gainclone can power these as well as a woofer. For the box design I was going to run the driver parameters through winisd; is there a better option? I was also looking at this for a sub option: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=264-862 Also, what kind of specs and output should I be looking for in a plate amp? |
