So, why not in-wall speakers?

Why is it that no one designs their own in-wall speakers? As long as you were to:

* Make sure there was nothing large obstructing the sound's path to your listening position that would cause reflections.

* Build a proper cabinet into the wall. So, proper material baffle and sides, damping material, etc. You could have a good amount of volume if you needed it because even though the volume is thin, it's large.

What else would prevent you from having quality sound? You could certainly obtain a high degree of WAF this way. If you built satellites into your wall and crossed over to an IB subwoofer in your floor or ceiling you could have really fullrange sound as well.

So, why not?

Sure, it sounds like a great idea with a high WAF, and it is... this month.
I believe that for long term usage, the greater flexibility of free-standing speakers wins out for most people.

I have in wall ( actually more like IB) speakers in a multichannel/ambiophonic setup and they are great. The only disadvantage is that they are not working very well in stereo only, because wit the in wall setup you will lose lots of early reflections from behind the speakers. 2 channel recordings does not/can not contain enough ambient info for realistic playback, so the reflection and reverb of the playback room is essential for acceptable stereo reproduction.
