Default Bose Clone

Has anyone made a bose 901-like speaker with some of the small full range drivers around these days?
If so, how did it stack up?
Thanks

You realize there's a whole subforum dedicated to fullrange drivers a mouse click away?

Not to many Bose fans around here. You might want to read this thread:

Or completely ignore what others have to say about Bose and form your own opinion about them, and preferably keep that opinion to yourself, as many others should as well.

Hi Britbug,

While I am a bit of a Bose basher, I am interested in the project. Are you considering the same layout as the 901? It was nine 1 ohm (approx) drivers wired in series with a proprietary equalization circuit and a goofy cabinet. This will be hard to duplicate.

Chops posted while I was typing. Chops, this is what this forum is about. I used to think the 901 was a great speaker, now I know better and certainly don't mind trying to steer others away from wasting their money by attempting to duplicate this inferior design. We all had dreams of something like that at one time or another but thankfully wisdom prevailed. Sure they'd be fun but that's a lot of money to find out you've headed down the wrong road.

I was just trying to keep this thread from tuning into another war zone, that's all. Because as you well know, they almost always do. Besides, "Bose" IS a 4 letter word. LOL

Hi, I was thinking of serial/parallel wiring up some cheap Parts Express Drivers (maybe fostex) to give a usual load (8 ohm) but in a similar kind of configuration.
Maybe using a tweeter for some highs if needed.
I hadn't thought on equalization beyond what you can get on a computer or ipod.

I thought about this when I first wanted to build speakers. The problem is, I couldn't find any good information on the subject. Even if you could get it to work, I think it takes the correct room setup for a bunch of speakers pointing to the wall. I have heard a good 901 setup in a church, but the room was big, and the speakers facing a brick wall.

My advise is to choose one of many projects already designed. I still think of myself as a newb, but I've attempted some basic clones with good success. A 901 clone would be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY over my head. I would imagine that it would take a good knowledge of room acoustics and the whole a wall is a baffle issue.

A different (and in my opinion better) implementation of the direct/reflecting principle is a single fullranger at the height of your ears, facing the ceiling and an EQ for correction.

I can envision a combing problem with an array in the upper frequencies.

maybe you can make a pyramid-way speaker with each driver playing a couple octaves less up top than the previous.

1 20-20k
2 20-2k
3 20-200Hz

or something like that.
