I am refurbishing a crossover that i have a schematic for. On this schematic the DCR for (inductor) L1 is given as .36 ohms. The best replacement i have found is rated at .7 ohms. This is a 2nd order 2 way crossover and L1 is on the woofer side of the network. Will this change in DCR significantly move the crossover frequency or cause other unwanted problems?

An inductor with higher DCR will lower the efficiency of the woofer. Going from .36 to .7 ohms will only lower it by about half a db, but it will be over a broad range, so you may notice a shift in tonal balance.
Try zalytron.com, they have an 18 awg Erse Super Q iron core inductor for only $7.41, with a DCR of .217. You have to pay with paypal, and shipping will cost a little more than PE. Zalytron also has the a 14 awg 2.00mh air coil inductor, with a DCR of .306. Price is $14.77 Dan |

Not only the efficiency, but the Q of the woofer will change (increase), making it sound just a little different.

What would happen if I replaced an inductor with a lower DCR?
http://zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker17-crossover.gif In Zaph's L18 design I plan to build my own coil for the L0 2.2mH to save a few bucks. It's not that hard really. According to online inductor calculators, I can get and even lower DCR at about 0.18ohm. Will that be detrimental to the design? Should it be the 0.30 ohm exactly as he specified? Peter |
