I have to build new speakers soon.
I just bought a new CD player and now I can "Really" hear the imperfections in the bookshelfs I modded a while ago. It seems that each time I improve one aspect of my system I start to want to upgrade the next. Has anyone here(hear) used plumbing elbow to house small drivers?? I was thinking of doing something that wasn't a tall thin box for a change. Jaycar carbon-fibre 165mm drivers are happy in 10litre sealed, mid-bass duty, Bi-amped and crossed to the subs anywhere around 120/155hz, croosed passive at 3K and to the super at 8.5K

You might find that if you like that type of thing, then this is the type of thing you like. http://www.linkwitzlab.com/Pluto/intro.htm
A little goofy for my tastes, and when I first saw them I feared Siegfried had fallen off the rocker, but apparently they sound good! Regards, David |

thanx, just bought a new router to fit the Jasper jig, priced 150mm plumbing fittings and pipe, I can buy a full sheet of MDF and marine ply for the cost of 2 elbows, so unless I find some cheap elbows and pipe at the thieves market on Sunday, boring rectangular box it will be (possible new mortgage in the near future)
gtforme00 I thank you for the link

I've heard the Pluto and they are very cool. I don't think that I would use these as a primary speaker due to their limits in absolute dynamics and frequency extremes but they are really capable of producing some great music.
If I didn't already have a bunch of projects on deck I would consider them. They would be incredible for my office! Nate |

While they may work well I do not have that much floor space, I was thinking of a ceiling suspended system, these are for our study to complement the Cerwin Vega 12:4 compact sealed subs.
Plastic (PVC or HDP) pipe is a little expensive for this project.

Use hole-sawed wooden cubes for the elbows and cardboard tubes from rolls of carpet, rolls of fabric, plasma screen packaging, A laminate of 2 different sized tubes from the post office with plaster and chicken wire between. Even old clay sewer pipe could be used for the larger section.

What about concrete, cured with waterglass so it's like those marble kitchen bench-tops? (I'm having a bit of trouble locating some though)

I've not heard of this before, does waterglass give a different effect when mixed with cement/concrete? I suppose you have done it, can you describe it or perhaps give links giving ratios etc? |

nah, it was a moment of geekiness after buying some Accuton drivers and wanting to join an online forum or two.... And now I don't know how to change it without rejoining as "someone else", but no matter Quote:
I've been wanting to get that "polished stone" look, and discovered that it somehow involves soaking freshly dried concrete in waterglass, which reacts with the alkaline cement compounds and solidifies... but that's about as far as I've gotten so far. All I know is that the concrete / concrete-like mixture of cement and granite grit should be fairly dry and mechanically squished to give the stones a dense alignment and a smooth surface. As for the waterglass (aka: sodium silicate), I don't even know where to buy it... Maybe Bunnings or something? Lech

It's the suspended mass of the concrete that deters me from trying the cast agregate method, if I went to the Rocla factory I could buy second quality concrete pipe cheap, if my memory serves correctly $1.45 a kilo, cost isn't the main factor, space and WAF. are the main considerations.
Remember these are for mid-range duty only,, in a sealed box these little drivers have very little below 80Hz
