Default External passive crossovers... In front of the power amplifier?

so, I have decided to locate the crossover for my new speaker outside the box near my amplifier... then I got to thinking, would there be any advantage to locating the crossover between the preamp and amplifier? Maybe located in a tape loop on the preamp? Then I could have multiple crossovers and switch between them?

I guess there could be some impedance matching issues, or something... any ideas?

No that's called a passive line level crossover. Some like them but IMO you might as well make it active and get even more benefits.

You are of course realising that putting something at line level needs one amp channel per drive unit?

Passive xover is for use between power amp and loudspeaker.
What you want is the use of active filtering between pre-amp and power amp. So, an entirely different matter!

right, I understand what active filtering is. I guess I was asking about a passive crossover between the preamp and power amplifier, if this was possible or if someone could describe the pros and cons of doing such a thing

if I recall Marchand electronics claims they have incredibly good S/N ratio, which, being a passive component, I would have to believe. I haven't looked at his website lately, I'm not sure if he still has them for sale.

very cool. that's exactly what I was thinking of. Actually, this is a good example of combining the PLLXO and a traditional passive crossover:

so ... I will have to think more about this

I'm assuming this is what you're referring to?

Yes, that is the one.

Sometime last year(or before) Audio Express (Audio XPress?)had some articles on passive line level crossovers.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what issues those articles were in. I think there were two, but it might have only been one.
