Hi
I've just stumbled upon two cabinets with a Philips 9710 fullranger and a Philips AD 5201S/77 woofer and crossover in them. They are obviously and quite cheaply DIY from a long time ago and about 60 liters in size. There is something like a longish port out of chipboard next to the 9710, but doesn't look purposely tuned to me, might be though. The backs have ugly holes in them, as if there had been an amplifier module fitted. So I took the backs off and am very impressed by these speakers playing in a u-dipole (or whatever you want to call a box with no back). But of course I'd like to get the most out of them and before I start to experiment wildly, does anyone know of any cabinet plans for those speakers? From the little information I've found on the net about the bombardons, there seems to be a closed box design for it with a 9710. But it seems to be more of a rumor. Does anybody here know anything about such a thing? Any information is appreciated, thank you |

I too found a pair of those and am currently using them on an open baffel with a se tube amp . I am quite happy with them
this way. But this is a hi qts driver and would need a large ported box. Mu memory is verry fuzzy about this but I think a good ported box needs to be in the 6 cubic foot range. On the Fullrange driver forum there is an article about someone using one in a BIG tqwp. Good luck with them. |

Thanks woody
open baffle would be my first try too. Some time ago, diyaudio-member "jaap" wrote: "A good combination is the 9710 with the famous Philips Bombardon Woofer (AD5201 S77) in a closed box: see the philips booklet, number A13." I tried to email him about this booklet, but I can't since I'm under moderation as a new member. Maybe somebody has access to this "luidsprekerbehuizingen voor zelfbouw" booklet? |

I think I'll just forget about that box and put them in open baffles, even if the bombardon has a somewhat low qt for that.
Thanks for the suggestions. |

Hi there,
My first stereo sound on my own speakers came from two 9710M's In the original Philips design Just a simple box 30 cm wide 30 cm deep and 100 cm high, all internal dimensions, iirc. It had the speaker a few cm from the top edge. The cabinet had a wedge of glasswool 30 x 30 at the bottom and 30 x 3 at the top about 80 cm high. Build in 1967, the sound was very pleasing and coherent and needed only a few watts. Later (1978) replaced by an own design KEF B200 plus Audax TW80. Kind regards, Rick

Hi Vathec,
Take a look at Troels Gravesens experiments with AD9710, a good read in many respects. http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/philips9710.htm

Hello,
I've some old philips manuals and the bombardon must have a closed box of about 50 liters.I'm in hollidays, when i come back I'll send the original datasheet. For the 9710 a little open pannel up 200hz will be perfect. Ciao Guglielmo |
