I have a number of vintage speakers (old Tannoy coaxials, WE555s etc) that I want to store for several years until I get time to play with them. Where is the best place to keep them - the attic? the basement? cupboard above the water heater?. Should I wrap then in binliners or leave them open to the breeze?.
Any ideas appreciated (no I don't want to sell them :-) cheers M |

I would opt for the living room as for (acoustic) instruments.
Play with them occasionally. Try a humidor... |

If there's salt water nearby, a pressurized box. I recently worked on a tube tester that was stored immaculately, but near salt water. Jeebus, the innards were rough!
Inductor's advice is sound. If it's comfortable for you, it will be for the speakers. |

Perhaps storing them face up for a month then face down for a month too. or edge on, rotating them 90 degrees occasionally, just like good champagne.

Put something under the motor so they're positioned as they would be in a speaker. Rotate 180 degrees every 3 months?

Seriously, I KILLED a pair of Tannoy drivers by making their environment too dry. The corrugated surrounds crumbled.

In a dark box I say, away from UV light, which may age the surrounds and anything else with polymers in it.

The best way to store cone based drivers is face down. If the suspension gets in the way, shim up the basket edge to allow for clearance. Store them at room temperature in a dark place with good air circulation and average humidity. Keep them away from UV and second hand smoke. Naturally, they shouldn't be around chemicals either.
