Default My fantasy project

Hello, I'm Ofir and as you probably guessed I'm new to these forums, so let me start by saying hello...hello.
I have a pair of old Morel loudspeakers which are quite good, actually they're great. The problem with them, which is not really a problem, is that they're great for my old turntable...meaning they have warm mid sound with rich highs, yet its lows are low, but not punchy and strong enough...what I'm trying to say is that I really love these speakers though for newer types of music and movies they aren't that great...good but not great.
After wandering around in second hand online shops, I came across a pair of morel dome mid-ranges, which are well known, and some old Cerwin-vega speakers, VS100 to be exact.
I thought about buying these stuff and coupling them into one speaker.
what do u guys think about coupling Morel with a Cewin-Vega woofer?
The exact drivers are:
Morel MW266
Morel MDT37
Morel MDM55 (I think)
Cerwin-Vega...10" woofer, no idea about the model :P
Thanks in Advance.

P.S
I'm really not sure this project'll c daylight since im quite broke right now, but if i'll get the money, it will.

Certainly the Morel is good stuff, and the SPL of those drivers is pretty good. But you might want to experiment with the CV. If it's a fairly cheap speaker, it may not be a good match in SPL. Worse, some of those have a high-Q peak in the bass that may sound like a one-note boom. If that's so, then the bass will probably not even go below 60 Hz!

Good Luck,
Kent

Sorry for my ignorance, but do u mean crossover by CV, and whats a Q-peak?
I gave you the specific codes of each driver, you can see for yourself they're alright and they are even still on sale, they without a doubt go under 60 Hz.
Of course I meant building a new box for those drivers...actually I have speaker manufacturers near my house, Omega-Audio, if you heard of them, so I was thinking about paying them to build me a custom speaker (they do it).
thanks again.

Sorry, I meant CV as Cerwin-Vega!

On the Q; if a woofer is low cost, the magnet may be rather small. Then the thing will have a high Q (and therefore a peak) at the woofer resonance.

Say, you might want to find a book on speakers!

Sorry I didn't know the high q thing dude...my knowledge on the technical aspect is without a doubt lacking.
Where can I get a book on speakers? anything I could find around the net?
Thanks again, I'm really looking forward to working on DIY stuff.

are you describing my Morelline?
A redesign is on my mind as well. Probably a reflex enclosure should provide more punch.
I'm not ready to blame the woofers yet.

Online, I noticed that www.partsexpress.com has some good basic info on their DIY resource pages. Please note that unless you get extremely lucky and you're doing a very simple design, you will need to gain some basic understanding to get good results. But for us, that's all part of the fun!

Good Luck!

I got today a pair of 15 years old Morel dome mids. These are really weird looking and I think their magnet isn't a neodimium one... their quite heavy, and big too.
My next step is getting a pair of 9" Morel woofers, and then I'll start planning my cross over and after that I'll start with the box design.
I love it!

I know u guys don't take me seriously...actually I'm having trouble taking myself seriously ( :P ), but I'm actually making some progress in my project, as minor as it is.
I got a hold of two Morel 8" woofers for free (for some reason the guys at Morel like calling it a 9" mid-woofer though it's more of an 8", and it does get to around 2000 Hz). So now I have 4 8" or 9", u decide, woofers, 2 52mm dome mids, and 2 28mm horn tweeters, all are Morel.
I went to Omega-Audio today, the loudspeaker company I told u guys about, and it turns out they used to be Morel 15 years ago, so they know everything about Morel drivers. I asked them about building me boxes and fitting my elements in them, but the amount of money they were asking for was just too high, so I gave up on 'em. But it wasn't in vain that I went there, because the dudes at Omega told me they were using original Peerless 8" elements to give their speakers some more dynamics at the low frequency range. That led me to buying Peerless speakers with 8" woofers which I found at 92$...actually I didn't buy them yet, but I'm almost certain I'll buy them.
I'll keep you guys updated!
Ofir

P.s
The Omega-Audio company I'm talking about isn't the fullrange speakers manufacturers you're probably thinking about.
