I wasn't really sure how I was going to shape the top of the speaker, (remember, its an open baffle MTM + dual vented bass).
I had cut the outer baffle from 1" mdf, and was playing around with the pieces I had cut off, laying them flat underneath the main baffle. ie, the wings are not angled back.

I reckon it looks just cool as it is. I am planning to 1/2" round-over the baffle edges, I think.

I really like the sharp corner on the outside rather than the rounded corners like on the sketch.
What do you guys reckon?

Comments always welcome !!!

The original sketch is linked below.

Ok, enough opinions to curve the top of the wings, but, should I angle them back at, say, 45 degrees? or maybe 30 degrees?

The yellow and black Vifa MG's will make choosing the colours fun !! :Popworm:

Any colour suggestions also welcome !!

for bass I am considering 2 of these a side. I can buy for $30 each. Fs 37 in 65litre (just over 2cu ft).

Hi Andy, I needed an excuse to say g'day !

How about a paint scheme of a Juke Box or a PinBall machine! Wow,
that would be great! Innovative yes!, tasteful?... well maybe not! Flashing Leds and flipper buttons! Hehe, I'm sorry I couldn't resist having some fun, I hope you don't mind!!!

Seriously though, I'm a great fan of you site and have learnt a little about series crossovers ( your 3way topologies look very interesting!) I'm series-ly thinking about going down that path for my project. Has the ground dried out in Maitland? Cheers ..grant ..@terrigal

look identical to my four Jaycar CW-2136 in boxes in my garage. I finally have a project for them? Sounds promising indeed! Would you by any chance have the FRD/ZMA data and Z /response plots? I hope you don't mind me asking? thanks very much , grant

They are the same driver, Electus is Jaycar's supplier company.
That means I only havee the info that's available on their web sites. They do quite reaonable bass though.

And if you are only in Terrigal, feel free to pop up here any time.

Andy,
Their paper cone woofers have a high Q suitable for OB (& cheaper too!!!), I'm using a pair of the 12"ers:

(Was thinking of using 4/side, but I already have too many speakers & running out of room, so that will have to remain a thought experiment....)

Re: the 8"ers, I have their (obsolete) carbon fibre version & an Altronics 'PECC' cone version with similar specs, these sound great in a small vented box.

Cheers,
Pete McK

Hi Everyone,

Andy very pretty looking design. I am looking forward to developments. How about the 15inch venom driver? looks like a beast. You might do better with 2 of these, 15mm Xmax.

I have looked at this driver, seems very nice for OB. Not quite sure how a woofer with Q this high would sound on OB. Pete do you have any comments on the sound?

Regards Philip

"any comments on the sound?"

OK, From 200Hz down I'm using a paper 12" + an unknown 10" (but looks like Hi Q - small magnet, stiff suspension) in parallel on a baffle 43cm wide x ~ 1.5M high, based on the Visaton 'no baffle'; using bass boost on the amp as EQ, and the baffles are probably too close to the wall, so far from ideal conditions, but there's plenty of bottom end, not completely flat, a tad of boomyness, more noticable further away from the speakers, but i'm sure if I could be bothered to tweak the boost point of the baxandall control in the amp lower I could get it just right...

It was just a spur of the moment experiment to use up a bunch of drivers I would otherwise have probably thrown away, I'm happy with the result & we use them on our 2nd TV system, can fill up the backyard with sound no probs...

I think the jaycar 10" paper drivers, having a lower Q would be more predictable... but looks like they're getting rid of these...
4/side would have ~ the same Sd as 2x 15"

more details here, tweeters have been replaced with EV T35s:

I'm sure Andy's baffles will have more class
Cheers,

Hi Andy and all,
re:"feel free to pop up here any time"...that would be great when my old rust-bucket is fixed! I'd like to say hello and see/hear your designs.
I trawled this site and came up with the attached CW-2136 'Response' plot. It has a nasty 2Khz peak (but I guess you already know this!) and no Z plot. I'm looking forward to see how your latest design(s)
evolve. Is your CW-2136 design now superseded? cheers, grant
