After looking at the distributed port designs I have wondered if it is possible to create a speaker that has the characteristics of a BR and a aperiodic loading.
To tune a box at a certain frequency you need a vent of a certain size. We know that the smaller the vent area the shorter the vent has to be. So here is my thinking. If we calculate the box size and tuning frequency and then make the port small enough so that the length of the port is the thickness of the wall material then the port is small enough that it creates as resistive flow. Then to adjust the resistance amount we make several small ports near each other until we have the right amount of resistance. So this is really just a distributed port made up of several small holes. But is it possible to balance the acoustic resistance with the tuning so that you got a balance of BR and aperiodic behavior? |

Sure. That is what the distributed port design is about.
You can also add stuffing to a single port to get the same effect. At the tuning frequency, the impedance gets higher, cone motion increases and the port output decreases. While never used for PA, many hi fi builders and manufacturers prefer the sound to the unrestricted port.

as Bill Perkins of PEARL did it. Tune a box, stuff the port full of straws. Makes even a horrible design sound great. Another way is as used in an Onken enclosure, or as per Variovent designs.
