Default 1" compression drivers with 2" diaphragms

Why aren't there any?

Wouldn't that depend on the horn design?

40mm voice coil, 25mm throat diameter from Visaton

Is that the sort of thing you're looking for?

I guess 1.6" is the max, huh? What happens once you make it bigger than that?

Obviously the result will be a midrange driver with high end rolloff

A bit strange as there are lots of "normal" and much bigger fullrange drivers ?

It appears that cone break up may be a problem, and might be related to the light cones demanded fore the high efficiency

So it's got nothing to do with the phase plug? i.e. 2" worth of diaphragm can still be "squeezed" into 1"?

A 44.4mm diaphragm has been traditional for a 1" throat, but you can make about any size you want.

The EV DH2 is a 2" diapragm and a 1" exit.

Considering that the wavelength of a 20kHz sine wave is only about 17mm, or 0.67", I think there might be some actual physical constraints that inhibit a good horn design if the diaphragm is too wide compared to the throat.

That's what the phase plug is for.

Standard spacing in Altec/JBL is for 16Khz.

TAD added an extra slit for 20Khz in their models.

Why not use a .75" or even a .5" throat, then? If I understand correctly, you get better high-frequency dispersion (and less HOM, according to Geddes) that way.
