Default speaker design

Hey guys, I would like to build a set of speakers for myself but I am completly lost. So firstly I would just like to state that i dont know anything

Anyways, I would like to build a nice set of floorstanding speakers. I dont want massive towering speakers, I want to make them nice and slim when looking from the front. I decided to copy a design I saw in a audio shop.

What I want is a tweeter and mid/bass(roughly 6") top center and then to mount a bass driver(8-10") on the bottom side of the cabinet making the cabinet a little deeper but still nice and slim from the front.

Now to get the ball rolling I need to select the tweeters and drivers but apparently you cant just select any old thing, certain combos have been tried and tested etc.. the problem is, all the tried and tested combos are either too expensive for me, or I cant seem to find a UK distributor. Could someone please have a look at this site and suggest a good combonation for me?

Secondly is the crossover. I dont even know where to begin with this. Is there a place where I can take the diagrams etc and ask them to build it for me? or what are my options?

Anyways, so sorry about asking these pretty common questions, but I dont have much free time at all to learn it all for myself, I'm getting there slowly but surely.

Any help would really be appreciated

Thank you
Craig

Try to build a kit first, this helps to better understand the subject of building loudspeakers.

Hi Craig,

Kits are a great place to start. What is your budget? How are your woodworking skills?

Well, this will be the second set of speakers I build, but the first time was back in SA where all I did was walk into the shop and took what looked good, the guy gave me some "standard crossovers", I got home and whipped up some bookshelf cabinates and was very impressed, I used the speakers for many many years but unfortunatly left them back in SA when I came over to the UK.

I guess my woodworking skills are ok... I'm a carpenter :P

I have looked through the kits and there is only one that falls into my price/want catagory but im not quite sure whether I would go that route or not.

I'am also not really sure on a budget, I'm just kind of going to see where it takes me

Does anyone have any experience or comments about monacor drivers (NOT the KEP range) like the sph-165 that they have at wilmslow? Or is it strongly advised to rather go for something like the vifas?

Have a look at the kits supplied by: http://www.lautsprechershop.de/english/index_hifi.htm

There are a vast number of kits to choose from, most are written and described in english. Do not be put off by the international mail order aspect. These guys are quick and efficient with postage. They are happy to discuss projects by email and their english is excellent.

In the "Speaker Kits" section of their home page, click on the journals, K+T, CT, Hobby Hi-Fi. The CT page has a kit design CT207 that is very similar to your specifications, and seems very low priced. N.B. The 209Euro price is per speaker. You will need two I assume. Unfortunately the description of this kit has not been translated into english, but I am sure that they will explain the pros and cons to you. The vendors will probably make up the crossover for you, if you feel that you are unable. They are very helpful.

Good luck

Well, you could make your own design with a small proven 2-way, mounted in a bigger box to make room fore the side mounted sub, which you seem to like

Ofcourse you will need plateamps to drive the subs

Advantage is that mostly small 2-way are less effektive, so it
should be fairly easy to find a cheap and suitable sub driver

This design from Troels would be nice fore the "top"

And being in UK these sub drivers might do fine, and they have plateamps too

Yes, look up pro audio shops (the ones that build speakers for nightclubs, theaters and such) and you'll see that many of them do build custom circuits to order. Also most mail-order driver suppliers offer this service, but it's usually more expensive.
