I have an old pair of Altec Model 5 loudspeakers. I was thinking that a good first DIY project would be to upgrade the crossover on these speakers. I haven't opened them up yet, but I assume the existing crossover is pretty crude.
According to the original Altec brochure, these speakers have a 12" bass driver and two 4" HF drivers in a vented enclosure. Crossover is at 1500 Hz. Would an improved crossover make enough of a difference to be worth the effort?

Better parts may have a little influence but redesigning the whole thing is hard to say. You will have to measure the drivers, etc.

Difficult to find the good adaptations. Often, a mark(brand) of capacitor with a mark(brand) of resistance does not give the wished result.
I experienced to replace parts on Spendor BC2 x-over and it was a disaster. I kept origin. Change the parts it's ok, but not forget the cabling and the connectors. Please, take a screwdriver and take time to tighten all screw of the box and speakears. You discover an image 3D. |

I asked this same question a few weeks ago regarding the x-overs on a pair of Mirage m1si's.. I heard the parts are cheap, and that a few years ago this was the thing to do.. Cant find anyone now who knows what I'm talking about..chucker
