Default Ribbon Tweeter advice please

Many years ago Wilmslow Audio did a loudspeaker kit called ‘Electrostatic one‘, I think. The small electrostatic panels would arc at highish volume levels. Anyway, the mid/base unit was a Volt BM220DS which I’m considering the possibility of using this with a ribbon tweeter in a two-way design. I estimate the crossover frequency would need to be about 2500-3000kHz? Could anyone recommend a suitable ribbon drive unit, something like the ones from Pinsh! but not available as a DIY drive unit I expect. Any gems out there?

Dear dyno,

This may not be universally agreed with, but may be useful:

I'm considetring the visaton magnetostat, not a true ribbon but a good tweeter I think. the Precide Heil amt is interseting but probably not available for diy.

any thoughts on crossovers!

Visaton is a good choice. If you want to use AMT, you can consider the Eton ER4 or the Mundorf AMT tweeters (both are very expensive).

How would you compensate for different sensitivity in your tweeter/mid-base units, in the crossover I mean. I have an old version of this:

http://www.voltloudspeakers.co.uk/Lo...y_bm220_8.html

which I already have a reflex cabinet for and would have the tweeter atop of it in its own little housing. At the moment I’m thinking of partnering it with a Visaton MHT 12 which apparently needs a 12db, 2nd order crossover (at 3000khz). Any thoughts you experts…!

UPDATE… if anyone’s still interested…I've been doing research

Still in the thinking about it stage… a 2nd order crossover; I have some capacitors, and resistors for sensitivity balancing (called a L something), will get some inductors calculated to nearest: .68mh somewhere to start from.

As for phase, if the tweeter is set back from the mid/woof @ 3000hz crossover would that do instead of reversing the polarity of the tweeter? And by how much? Is there a calculation or by trial & error?

No that product is almost useless as it assumes ideal electrical and acoustical response.
