Hello Kensai!

I had the upfiring Ciares in TQWTs for some time, being absolutely happy with the realism of the imaging, but not 100% with the resonating-tube-sound of the bass, compared to the free and open sound of the Ciare CH250 OBs I had before. So I finisched the schimaera today. The imaging is a bit less precise, with the dipole-typical extra air. But the amount of realism is unchanged. About the Eminences I have to agree with what MJK said about the Alpha-15 in combination with the Lowthers. The cheap Eminence basses don`t fall behind the expensive fullrangers. The midbass has a nice warmth that perfectly matches the character of the Ciares. If I had known the concept works I would have ordered a pair of Kilomax 18, maybe I`ll try them next year.

Regards,
Oliver

Is that environment in the picture where you're listening to them? Looks complex (lots of hard surfaces, corners, things, etc.).

So you're saying that they sound like a good OB, real and solid with plenty of air, with the fuzzier imaging typical of an omnipole?

How tall are yours (looking for the mounting height of the omni driver)?

I'm getting ready to build some speaks for a buddy whose room is complex (old house, high ceilings, lots of stuff), and I'm working from Kenwood KFC6949s (auto 6"x9" bicone fullrangers) and a large number of cheap Durabrand 6"x9"ers that I've pull the nasty mids and tweeters from to use as bass helpers (things have 30oz magnets compared to the Kenwoods' 10oz; really sound pretty good without the coax garbage, especially at $10 each). Not the height of SQ, I know, but its what's on hand (basically, what's free for right now), and my buddy isn't the most discerning ear).

Anyway, I was just going to make a pair of OB line arrays with them using 1 Kenwood and 4 Durabrands per side, but I could easily pack them all into a smaller space if the omniOB alignment would work. I could just lay all bass drivers on their sides and front mount or possibly even to something of a ripole with them down firing, etc.

Like I said, big room, high ceiling, and this is all we can build for the moment. Any thoughts as to wether the lines or the more compact omin concept might fill that space better?

Hello Kensai!

My listening room is not very high (2.43m) and has a wooden ceiling. I cannot say whether my speakers also work in high rooms, but hanging wooden reflector boards over the speakers would correct if it doesn`t work. I don`t like reflector cones because they make the image flat. The height of the speakers is the height of my ears when I am sitting.
What I am quite sure about is that the concept doesn`t work with other drivers (at least not without EQ).
If it has to be really cheap (at least in the US) I have an idea:
I once had an american ceiling speaker in hand, kind of an ultra-cheap oversized Manger, brand: Sound Advance. Absolutely unsuitable for the specified purpose, even OB sounded awful, but standing free it gave a nice dipole, not neutral, but good impulses, with some wow-effect (tested with a T-Amp, you probably know it, also cheap). The Look would be futuristic, also wow.
Here is an other Sound Advance product, a hanging speaker (unfortunately only one), adverted as "omnidirectional", but from the flatness I rather believe it is a dipole:http://cgi.ebay.com/Sound-Advance-O...ryZ26261QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

edit: I just saw there are up to five available.
