Alright, I had a bit of time to myself this weekend which is always nice so I finally got something up and going, something that I have always wanted to make. Which was an open baffle config. And about time too.
It consists of the lovely FR125S from CSS and the Adire Extremis, which has been laying around here for quite some time. Knocked up the baffles in about 3 or 4 hours, not including glue drying, and had them inside and playing. Thus far, it sounds ever so promising, was comparing them side by side to another speaker I just finished too. Don't go as low as the BR ones next to it, and nor did I expect it, but did get lower than I was thinking they would. Which is always a good thing. Crossover is... well, if you would call it a crossover, an inductor and a capacitor soldered on to there respective drivers. And thats that there. Crossed over at around 700hz. Only ones I had laying around, does the job just nicely. I now need to think about making a proper one, as atm, I think that is what is letting it all down very badly. So yeah, need to come up with a nice crossover for those 2 drivers. Never really done one before, but there is a first time for everything! Been a full range man all my life, but this time its something different. If any one has some suggestions when it comes to that would be good. Also, depending how it all goes. I shall neaten it up and give it a nice veneering all over. Another first. As for initial listening, I must say, I was quite surprised. That little FR125S keeps on surprising me. Lovely open soundstage, and the detail, ran it through a bit of everything didn't seem to falter. Only complaint was the rather harsh highs, but after a few hours everything seemed to have settled. There not broken in yet, so I shall give it 20 or so more hours. But in the mean time, I shall look at doing a half decent job on the crossover and going from there. |

Cool!
I think bi-amping would be your best solution...four channels of amplification with an active Xover would give you all the flexibility you'd ever need.

Thanks for your input Glowbug. It would be the way to go but I don't have the money to go out and buy a few more amps or x-over or the time to make them myself. So I'm left with passive crossover and one amp. Down the track when I get more adventurous, that would be the way to go! But until then, I'm stuck in that regard lol.
