Default Calling all ATC mid experts!

Not sure if anyone has the answer for this question...

I own a pair of ATC mids (SM75-150 - 16ohm) probably built in the late 80s or early 90s.

The wave guide on my units are the straight, non-flared one. The new domenstic loudspeakers ATC sells seem to be using the flared version - but on their site, the Pro versions of the loudspeakers seem to still use the straight one (same as on mine).

Does anyone know the reason for this? What is the difference between these two wave-guide types?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have read that a straight conical waveguide will have less ripple, if I remember correctly

Thanks tinitus.

Seems strange that ATC would update the wave guide if it would cause more ripple. I guess there are other advantages?

ShinOBIWAN or thylantyr are probably the people to answer that. Try PM...

Well, I have ordered the new wave guides to replace my conical ones. So I guess I will have to report back to what the differences are.

I'm not an ATC expert but do like their drivers and have worked with quite a few of them now. Because they're such good drivers I became a bit of an ATC geek and gathered as much info as I could.

The ATC mids with the straight profile are the mk1 and mk2 which were produced from their initial introduction in 1976 to 2000. In 2000 the mk3 was introduced which had the curved profile waveguide, the rear chamber was also improved on this revision.

I have only worked with the mk3 mids including both variants (the super and standard)) so I couldn't tell you the exact differences to the older mk1/mk2. The updated waveguide is said to improve impulse response according to ATC.

BTW:

All pre 2000 models (both pro and domestic) will use the mk1 or mk2 mid unless they've been upgraded by their owners (ATC do have a very good driver upgrade policy). Anything produced after 2000 has the mk3 mid and this again includes pro and domestic models.

Thanks for the reply!

The only thing I can't figure out is that the pictures of the pro versions (studio) of their speakers seem to be using the old conical wave guide - at least according to their pictures on the site. Maybe they just have not updated the photographs?
