Suggestions for first speaker project

Greetings!

I'm a complete noobie so please be gentle!

I'm looking for a set of plans for a simple and basic beginner small speaker project. Right now I'm thinking along the lines of a bookshelf 2-way design. Maybe even down the road do a sub for a 2.1 speaker system.

I'd go over to the fullrange forum and find a nice bookshelf-sized-cabinet speaker project. You'll get plenty of experience in many of the differing aspects of speaker building and the outcome? Well, it's not guaranteed, but it's pretty hard to miss. That way you have gotten some experience, have produced a speaker that you can then listen to as you work on your next project, and have something to use as a reference for your next speaker.

BTW: fullrange (or perhaps extended range) speakers can have an addictive quality that is very hard to overcome. They can be inexpensive and yet very satisfying as most of them really do the midrange well, and that's where the music is.

Whatever you ultimately choose to do, remember to have fun and enjoy yourself.

How are your woodworking skills? What is your budget?

For just under $400 (including cabinets from PE), this would be an awesome first project. Zaph Audio BAMTM

For under $200 you could build the Microbe SE project using the .25 beech cabinets currently on sale for $83 a pair at Partsexpress. With the price of two RS125S drivers and crossover parts, the order would be over $100 which qualifies you for free shipping.

First off a big thanks to all who responded. Second, I'd like to apologize for my first post as I really should have tried harder in my searches of diyaudio.com prior to posting.

My budget is on the skimpy side only because I'm a complete newbie when it comes to speaker building and I don't really want to break the bank for great sound. After all, that's why I do diy in the first place.

After going over the basics of the Microbe SE, it sounds to me it would be a ideal first time project that isn't too tough on my budget. I like the simple design as well. My workshop should have all the tools for building the Microbe SE too.

Again, a big thanks to all who responded.
