Agreed. And with sufficient advance warning, hopefully easier to achieve since the front surround / cone can be sized to suit a frame that is likely to remain available for the foreseeable future.

How about a Markaudio Hartley? IOW, a very wideband smooth response range of big drivers. Currently the best option for something like that seems to be either the Audio Nirvana (I'd be thinking something more damped/more travel/less efficient). Qts of around 0.4, 7mm Xmax, 90-92dB efficiencies. Very similar to JBL 123A/2213

I thought all could be well chosen standard parts, and only need proper assembling

but poleplates would ofcourse need machining to fit

Right -but Mark will presumably want to have at least some design input into the components, & he won't want to find 12 months down the line the frame (or whatever) is no longer available, mandating a considerable redesign of other parts to fit whatever else he could get to replace it.
