ah yes, the imaging - thanks for the sweet spot chair Jeff - yes the MarKens still do that disappearing trick quite well, but at the expense of the other issues discussed

for a few hours prior to the session at Jeff's, I ran a quick comparison of the following at my own place ( Denon AVR1610 with and without woofers)

EL70* / floor standing MarKenesque something or other ( - Dave can add the correct nomenclature)
Alpair7.2*/ Pensil
Alpair 10.2 / MarKen
Alpair 12.2P / MarKenT

* = "EnABL" - this might upset some folks, but in at least 5 years of listening, I have yet to hear a FR driver on which this did not make quite a big improvement in depth / dimension of soundstage and resolution of low level harmonic detail, even when buried deep in rather complex program material. For this session I primarily used David Gilmour Live "Meltdown / Royal Festival Hall" & Loreena McKennitt "Nights at Alhambra" DVDs - rather a lot of information in both of those - if you like that sort of thing

I'd be hard pressed to say I heard the 12P give up much in the way of top end extension to the 7.2s, but on this day they didn't achieve the same degree of "3D" - then again aforementioned tweak and my advanced hearing deterioration could explain that

With woofers reasonably well dialed in (gotta love that Audyssey), the MarKen12P are very good - a direct comparison to the SuperPensils would be interesting indeed, but may need to wait another day.

nothing is as simple as you'd like

We had to retire my Pete Millett DCPP amp due to some persistent noise issues in the right channel. My backup amp is a trusty old Jolida 302b with a few upgrades plus Russian 6P3S-E's triode strapped output tubes. Once warmed up, it's nice but not the "last word" if you know what I mean.

Volume is NOT an issue with either of these amps. Both have approx. 20 watts/ch. We played some music at quite a high level, the 302b never sounded like it was being pushed at all.

That LP looked clean, but was obviously quite dirty.

The new 12.2pT boxes are seriously pretty.

Great feedback Chris.

Jeff, it'll be nice if you start a new thread on the Super Pensil 12P and post your pics. I am pretty sure Dave is going to share an image or two of the Mar-Ken 12.2pT boxes soon , and look forward to see how they turned out; being the work of the "Ken Master" - they should be good!

jeff

don't get too explicit on the rather hasty assembly - brand nail holes / joints not filled or sanded - these will need some serious tarting up before " ready for the close-up, Mr DeMille"

Nice enclosures Dave, though I'm not too sure I'm liking the color match of the walnut and blue cone. Perhaps I'll have to go a different direction on the veneer choice. In any case, nice work!
