Less excursion at same SPL, so less distortion and potential to play at greater SPL. Also IIRC helps counter effects of baffle step loss in narrow cabinets. If side mounted as in Lotus^2, the FR unit serves as 0.5 driver and you get more bass.

and in the case of mounting the second driver in an up-firing configuration, ( i.e. Castle MicroTower) increased spaciousness of soundstage and less placement constraints than when side or rear mounted
