also keep in mind that the hex head mounting screws Mark supplies are more like a sheet metal thread - constant diameter shaft and higher thread pitch than a lot of wood screws, so a slightly larger pilot hole will prevent the screw from getting too tight before fully set, and therefore harder to judge when "just right"
and a little soap or paraffin wax on the threads is helpful - lube can be your friend
