Wow! Alpair 12 with paper cone early next year! Can't wait! But then I'll need some time to get ready for that project, so it can get my undivided attention!

Without reading back too many pages, the new generation being paper cones, does that mean if I'm interested in the metal version, I should try to find one as soon as possible? Seems like most places are out of stock already ><

Edit: Sorry, just noticed your post about it being optional. I'm excited for these to come around in March, I've decided my next project will use the 12.x as I've always wanted to add a pair of high quality full rangers to my arsenal of speakers

The 12's are fantastic speakers, I love mine in my SuperPensil cabinets! These new ones should be even better so I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

That's good to hear. Mine will be in reasonably small cabinets, as I only need my mains to go down to about 80hz to mate with my subs.

The only concern I have is occasionally, I like to get a little hectic with the volume knob, and I like listening to things like Flecktones, Fourplay, Spyro Gyra etc. Crossed over at 80hz and up, are the 12.x drivers snappy and dynamic when "leaned on" a little bit? I'm comfortable doing the break-in period with care, but I do have my moments.

Great to hear the paper cone option

For those of us that might get a bit "spirited", it sounds like a great driver. I'd much rather add a "helper super tweeter" than a "helper woofer" to the FR if I can help it--my desk is not large enough to support huge speakers. A single cap on a FT-17 bullet tweeter with L-pad would be a great combo with a paper coned Alpair 12.3. Simply install a switch to turn it on or off and adjust the L-Pad to taste.

Thank you Mark for the paper cone option and am looking forward to March.

I listen to all those same groups but I run mine full range and have had zero issues with them getting too close to XMAX or getting muddy. I can definitely "strain" myself tonight and give it a try at higher levels if you'd like just to make sure

For movies however I cross them at 80hz and run the system fairly loud and have yet to hear any strain either. I'm extremely impressed with these drivers as the HT environment had be worried before I ordered them. With the 80hz crossover its become a non-issue.

Awesome, that's what I was looking for. By strain, I mean realistic / reference levels, nothing too insane.

Exactly. I'm not pushing 100+ db by any stretch My subs definitely get there but that's a different story, I run them just a wee bit hot
