Thanks Mark, i'll take your advice and go with 10.2's. Won't be long before i place the order and get started with the Silbury or Pencil's.

Glad to help. Maybe the Pencil 10.2 might be worth trying first. It's easy to adjust the damping volume inside the cap, makes it useful for setting up in room. Your could make cheap MDF mockups as test units. If you like the result, then make nice ply or solid wood finished versions.

Cheers

Mark.

Mark,

I looked at the Pensil cabs and it didn't implicitly say so maybe I missed it somewhere, isn't the -3db point of the SuperPensil12 40hz? What is the -3db of the Pensil10.2?

Thanks!

Scott

Hi Scott,
From memory, its 36Hz on the Pencil 10.2 but the other Scott will have the exact detail.

Thanks

Mark.

Ok well that's even better. With all the discussion of the 10.2 I'm wondering if that may be better for me but the cone area, deeper f3, and overall physical presence of the Super12 are looking better to me ... Tough choices

45Hz F3 on 10.2, but it's not lacking in gain. -3dB is largely academic though.

Hi Scott,
Other Scott's corrected me (45Hz). The Super Pencil 12 cab is 40Hz (Scott L to correct me if needed). Tough choice. Certainly from last weeks listening test, the Pencil 10 with 10.2 drivers (not optimum) won by a short head over the Pencil 12. But the groups decision was very close and hinged on matching amps. Could we have found a sweeter amp match for the Pencil 12's? Possibly, in which case the decision could have swung the other way.

I've got a pair of Oakwood Pencil 10.2's arriving soon, then Super Pencil 12's to be build next. Once this is done, we'll get a better feel for the personality of both systems. My money is still on the Super Pencil 12's using my Accuphase's but this is purely personal choice. Norio, our Japan rep, who's also a respected jazz guitar player favours 10.2's.

Its purely a personal choice situation. Overall, if you've got a larger space, I'd possibly put the Super Pencil 12 (wife/parter permitting) more or less at the top of the list, but anyone wanting a slightly more mellow sound, the 10.2 with its new Matsubara san coil is ubber sweet, especially on a descent tube amp. Either cabinet system doubles up as an excellent flower/plant stand (keeping wife/partner happy).

"Hung Hei Fat Choi" (Happy Chinese New Year) for the year of the Rabbit.

Mark.

Or you can just double them up. Install a 2nd pair upside down on the 1st. WAF out the window thou.

Ok so 45hz on 10.2 and 40hz on Super12? That's pretty dang close ...
