Compare the FR graphs of say Fostex FF125WK and Alpair 10.2 (purple) below 500Hz - (or for that matter above 3K off axis) These drivers have approx same Sd and sensitivity - if you've heard both, about the only 2 things they have in common.

Now, exactly how he achieves this, I don't have a clue, and even if explained in terms I could understand, I'd likely misremember it.

Mark, feel free to censure this post for using the F-word, but my point is that even though " me love them (F....x) long time", the 10.2 will eat the other for breakfast in the bass department, and that's based on listening, not just supposition on my part.

and, yes, I realize that I'm contradicting my often posted disregard for the significance of such measures, but as a non scientist, I'll grant myself the liberty of such inconsistency

I see squiggly lines...the purple squiggly line is more linear compared to the other.

Should I shoot myself in the head now? Thats how I feel right this instant.

no worries, in over 10yrs of forum posting, I've put my foot in it more times than I can count

for the record, the purple squiggly lines represent the Alpair10.2

(thanks for the quick work with graphics, Dave)

Just head back over to the "teen moms" thread and google "Sweater Puppies" and you'll feel much better.

The 'hump'/rise in the lower mids and bass of the 10.2 for example negates the need for a bsc network so that when the driver is put on a narrow baffle like many of the pensils or bass reflex boxes have (7'-9', etc.), the hump/rise flattens out - more or less. Baffle width determines when roll off occurs in frequency. So the Fostex on the other hand will roll off below ~500-600hz on a similar size enclosure thereby requiring a bsc network to even things out (at the cost of sensitivity).

10.2 is between 1.5 to 2x the size of the EL70. However they sound very different.
