Here's a pic of Mark Fenlon and Tadashi Matsubara San discussing the rear suspension set-up on the Alpair 12. A VERY interesting conversation.

There's also an interesting link to Norio Nakajima san's blog. Its in Japanese, worth using Google or similar to translate. Also some interesting links on this site

I am preparing a loudspeaker für the Hifi Music World in Germany if anyone is interested in listening the Alpair 12.

Hi Guys,
Running in method for Alpair 7 and Alpair 12

As you may have read in the main thread, the suspensions on both the 7 and 12 are special designs. The rear suspensions in particular require careful use during the running-in period. Please proceed as follows:

1 - Use music only, No artificially generated signal of any kind.
2 - Don't press down on the cone. This action risk's physical distortion of the power-train.

Alpair 12
First 20 hours - low listening volumes, Xmax not to exceed 2-mm. Play vocals, stay away from heavy bass music.
Hours 21 to 120 - gradually increase to middle listening volumes. Xmax not to exceed 4-mm. Gradually introduce rhythmic music with some bass.

Alpair 7
First 20 hours - low listening volumes, Xmax not to exceed 1.5-mm. Play vocals, stay away from heavy bass music.
Hours 21 to 120 - gradually increase to middle listening volumes. Xmax not to exceed 3-mm. Gradually introduce rhythmic music with some bass

Patience will deliver musical rewards!

Cheers,

Mark.

Does this mean there's limits on using them for Techno/Electronica (especially the european stuff)?

Some of that can be nastier (to the suspension I mean) than a 15Hz "breaking in" sine often used for speakers.

Cheers!

Hi Geek,
Go easy during the run-in period. It's not good to over-stress most any driver during the first 100 hours or more depending on the design. In the case of the spider, the material needs time to reach its optimal stroke length.

Re all types of music, the Alpair 12 is capable of playing any music once it's run in. Then it's all about your set-up, room etc.

I've got a pair playing loud (doesn't take much to get them performing) but like most big full rangers, they are best driven at moderate to normal listening levels. For big amp, play it loud, rock and roll guys, multi-way is the better bet.

Mark.

Designed but not built.

Avebury from Woden Design. Scott is looking for one or more serious beta testers.

Of course, same as any driver if you design the XO to the bass unit properly.

Not yet; sadly I don't have room to build Avebury myself, but the A12 certainly lends itself to BLHs.
