Default Lime removal in water heater.

Years ago I saw a chemical added to a water heater that removed the lime inside. It wasn't toxic and didn't cause any damage.

Any ideas on what it might have been? I watched the guy pour out a glass of it and drink it.

Googling "water heater lime removal" yields results that refer to A. O. Smith Un-Lime. Could that be it?
