Hypothetical question on patents

OK, so I know there is a bit of a dislike of Patents which are not worth the paper they are written on and actually having one does not gaurantee you anything unless you are in a position to defend it..... ie loads of money.

However, what if I came up with a thing that looks to be quite simple and minimises high frequency ripple current in both the power supply and at the output of the amplifier?

Sort of -20dB (10 times less) worth at zero output, more for the supplies when you're shunting some watts.

It looks like it's 'new', well it's close to other things so it's not too radical but it is 'different' and might be worth a patent.... That's if patents are worth having.....

What would you do?

Fiddle about with an patent application (I'm fairly confident it would be granted) or publish and damn yourself?

I have to go work things through to see if it really really works.

Yes, technically it has quite a lot of value.

No, I don't have the ability to turn it into something profitable for myself. I could design and build one though but that's only part of the doing something with it.

Yes, very much marketable. You get to publish real reasons for real results and real benefits.

Well... and you have to take this with a huge pinch of salt.

Having messed about a lot and made things go horribly wrong more than many times. And then made them go right and then found out they have gone wrong elsewhere.....

And I'm not certain but obviously I'm picking the best one or I don't really know but having played about a bit and thought about it it makes sense but I really really know there have got to be problems elsewhere like it doesn't work like this in real life.

This is half bridge open loop 20KHz into 4ohms.

Bottom traces are currents from the power rails.

Mid traces are the output voltage and power.

Top trace is the input. The modulator triangle is +/-5V the input is +/-4V the supply rails are +/-50V.... so the output should be +/-40V.

There is NO output filter capacitor!!!!!

If an inductor drives a resistor then the phase shift should be 90 degrees. Lookit Vmod versus Vout...... it's 90 degrees!!!!!

Honest..... it's a switching model of the power stage. Open loop.

Stuff it, I'm sure it will go wrong somewhere tomorrow.

Some very nice looking results, are you mixing rail currrents towards ripple cancellation or something? Doesn't even look like it's switching. I wonder how ideal your output stage model is?

In a case like this, hell of a question this patent thing, but if you can't defend it........??? Tough one!

Oh, how does it behave with a less than ideal load?

You can be fairly certain that the model is as ideal as I know how to make it give or take the odd conversion problem, which did not happen this time. Ideal switches, ideal diodes, ideal this and that.

That's the way I use spice, it's really a proof of concept sort of thing. I don't doubt that some other thing might go wrong in real life.

In this case what it does it what it says it does.... unless as I keep on saying I find somewhere esle where it tries to do something else.

Oh yes... if I load it with 1K instead of 4R it sticks 1.2kV on the output.. There you go, it's not so pretty after all.

That's tomorrows job, although tomorrow is this morning so maybe this afternoon when I crawl out of bed again.
