Default Cops won't give me my stuff back

So back around Halloween (2005)
My car was broken into and the thieves stole a 200w Pioneer amp attached to a sealed cabinet holding a 10" JBL sub.
I filed a police report, said "well I'm never going to see that again", and forgot about it.
Since this is a college town with a state school, the state school have thier own state police. The state police came into contact with another station that caught some thieves with my stuff. The state police officer sent some people over so I could identify my stuff. I did.
They say they have to transfer it to the local police because it's their jurisdiction. Ok.
A month later I call the local police and it starts.
I go there and they say "uh it's locked up I can't get it. The only people with keys are the Lt. and the evidence guy come back tomorrow"

Tomorrow:
The Lt. and evidence guy aren't there.

2 days later:
Lt. tells me that he can't get into the evidence locker (yeah, OK)
"Come back Friday at 11 PM"

Friday at 11 PM:
I'm sick and sleeping.

Monday:
Lt: "Yeah the guy that's handling your case will be here Tuesday at 11PM"

Tuesday, 11 PM (Today):
I'm standing outside the station, I can see the lights on but the door is locked. I call dispatch "we'll put you through.." I see an officer there who says "hold on let me see when he's working"
I see him walk over and check the schedule while I'm standing outside. him: "You still there?" me: "Yeah I'm right outside the door". him: "Well I can't get into the evidence locker the guy you want will be here a week from Today at 11PM"

So what's the trick to getting stuff back that has been stolen from you? I think they're just playing games with me to see if I'll just give up. My stuff isn't worth enough to hire a lawyer. I'd almost rather have the thieves still be using it. At least the cops wouldn't be sitting on it.

Go political. The city councilman for your district will no doubt have an office for constituent services. If your town is too small to have electoral districts, try the mayor's office. The key is to get help from some politician for whom your vote counts.

You sure the cops aren't actually using it. Half of them are bloody thieves themselves.

Call the TV news... or call the Cheif of Police and drop the hint.

You need a headline:

Cops do something right and screw it up anyway!

What he said. First, call the chief and threaten with no uncertain terms.

I owned a business once. My phone number started with 991. My second year I took out a 1/2 page ad in the yellow pages ($4K per month). They published (mis-printed) the first three digits of my phone number as 911...

They were willing to forget the money for the ad... but no compensation for the ill will it generated with potential customers. I had people chew me out for playing such a prank... after they got my correct number from an operator.

I climbed to the top of the food chain by asking every manager, "Have you ever had to deal with this problem before?". After their reply, "well, no", I would ask them if they really shouldn't hand this to their boss. Eventually, I got to the top of the western United States.

"Yellow page error ties up 911 system" was all he had to hear. I got my next 4 years yellow pages free.

get 'er done.
