Let them starve due to overpopulation - somewhat cruel and painful.

perhaps, but like this ?

In 2001, an independent team of veterinary experts studied Canada's commercial seal hunt. Their report concluded that in 42% of the cases they examined, the seal did not show enough evidence of cranial injury to even guarantee unconsciousness at the time of skinning.

btw, from the age of ten i've helped my dad kill off old chickens too old to lay any eggs anymore. I held the neck and he chopped the head. I know how you should kill an animal if necessary:fast and effective.

with kind regards,

Klaas

Another thread about cruelty to animals?

Seals: Too many to maintain a balanced ecosystem, prolific breeders. As mentioned we have done wrong by killing the predators.

One of the big things that hasn't yet been mentioned is that they eat a lot. A lot of baitfish that is, you know the kind the salmon eat? If we didn't kill the seals there would be a problem with the food fish.

I have no time for bleeding hearts who sit there and condemn a practice they are not familiar with while enjoying a nice, oh I don't know, let's say a veal dinner? Have any of you been to a slaughter house or rendering plant and seen what happens when the pin doesn't kill the animal? Suddenly the reality of the situation strikes you.

This is nothing more than sensationalist journalism.

Pamela Anderson? The world would be a better place if she were to do her little spiels while out on and ice floe. Oh help, oh help, I'm freezing out here. Can someone get me a coat? One of those nice warm ones made from...uh....er....seal?

What a crock.

Yeah. I both disagree..and agree.

I've been in slaughterhouses before. The stench and smell of fear of death is pretty pungent.

I was a vegitarian for a while and was also a strict veg for about 1.5 years. Just to say I know and understand the difference.

As for the seals, I wish they wouldn't do it at all. Please, at least:
1: don't kill the little ones in front of their mothers.
2: make damned sure they are dead before skinning them.

point # 2, I'm so adamant about, that if someone stood in front in front of a political office and skinned a seal hunter alive -to make a point....I'm not quite sure I'd be bothered by that.

I mean, there are countries nearby, for example..their 'elected' governments kill 100's of thousands of people in -other countries- in very nasty and severe ways..and the occupants of those given nearby countries don't even want to recognize that basic truth.

pot. kettle. black.

etc

Maybe we could start by electing governments who don't lie every moment they speak-- and possibly stop killing people in other countries?

PS: Folks who DO eat meat SHOULD BE REQUIRED to visit a slaughterhouse.

Know the truth of your bargains.

Canada's commercial seal hunt is an industrialized slaughter of 12-day-old to 12-week-old baby harp seals by Canada's commercial fishermen. It is not a cultural or subsistence hunt. It does not supply individual families with food or clothing. It provides the European fashion fur and leather industries with fur trim and fur and leather trinkets.

The main slaughter occurs over hundreds of miles of ice, where boatfuls of sealers rush onto the whelping grounds and, with undue haste, try to kill as many seals as quickly as possible, before other boats of competing sealers can claim them for their own. In order to do this, sealers levy a blow to immobilize the seal pups, so they can return later to finish them off and skin them.

Video evidence clearly shows sealers routinely dragging conscious pups across the ice with boat hooks, shooting seals and leaving them to suffer in agony and even skinning them alive. Tens of thousands of baby seals die a slow and agonizing death. Many others try to escape under the ice where they drown; many of the corpses are not recovered though some wash up onto the shore weeks later.

with kind regards,

Klaas

If they would, otherwise, die of starvation, wouldn't that be population control in itself?

How about a maritime wildlife spay and neuter program? If only we could get Bob Barker behind it.

Hey what about the no politics rule? Well, while we're violating that, it's not just killing people in other countries. The same un-named country's government offed a few thousand of its own a few years back as an impetus to the "War on Terror".

I expect to see this post in Texas. Is that where sinners go, or come from? Oh, the irony.
