Moving to North Carolina, any audiophiles out there?

Hey DIYers,
I'm moving to Raleigh, NC from the Bay Area, where we have a pretty vibrant audiophile scene, and I'm wondering if there are any audio nerds out in Raleigh.

Also, if you are in the Bay and want to check out my system at home in San Jose, hit me up 🙂 I'm here for another 2 weeks!

hi jrubins,

Sorry, I don't think you'll find it as "vibrant" (what a good word!) as what you've seen out west.
Cary Audio is in the area and at least years ago, there used to be decent audio shops near UNC in Chapel Hill, so there must be audiophiles (so, also likely DIYers) lurking around somewhere! The ones I used to know are LONG gone from the area, as am I.

Years ago, I used in live in Rocky Mount, NC and then later, Greensboro, NC, which of course, means nothing to you right now.
Didn't to me either back then, which is one reason I left.
🙂

Good luck on the move!

Thanks mlloyd1,
I was rather hoping that there was a little more in area. I've already reached out to Cary audio, so hopefully there's at least *something* going on in the area.

Hello!
I stay in Cary. I am just a beginner in the DIY world, and have mostly been into headphones rather than speakers (staying with cousins, tiny room, limited space too much stuff).

I honestly don't know many people around here who are into audio. I attended NC State, and while I know people passionate about music, I didn't find many (aka none) interested in audio per se.

I've been lurking around these forums for a while, seeing this thread urged me to finally create an account. 🙂

I believe there was a mini head-fi meet once last year (2016) in Asheville, but I couldn't make time to attend.

Cool! Well, I'm glad I persuaded you to join diy audio 🙂
I'm a headphone nerd too, I have a few decent cans, but nothing mind blowing.
Maybe when I get situated, we can meet up and start our own darn club!

Absolutely! I would like that very much indeed.
I had actually reached out to Cary Audio too when I was starting out a couple years ago, but they never got back to me. Their place is pretty close to where I live.

Did they ever get back to you?

I lived in Greensboro and there wasn't a lot going on. In fact I ran a mail server group for Carolina audiophiles. It was a flop.

There are a fair number in the Raleigh area, including Dennis Had, formally of Cary Audio.
I can probably put you in contact with a few.

Hey guys, it would be great to get together! I've just moved in about 2 weeks ago, so I am living in a box castle still 🙂
Once I get things completely unpacked, we can see about starting a club!
Tony, Pano, maybe we can all get together 🙂

Elessar, I did hear back from the social media team at cary audio. I intend to see if we can arrange for a group tour or something.
With 4-5 of us, we can totally make this happen!

I owned Cary SLP-98 preamp and 300-B amps - I forget the name of the amp - very low powered. I also owned Cary CD player - forget the model number. Bought all of this directly from Cary Audio ~10 years ago. I sold the preamp and I still have the amps and CD player which I'd like to sell.

I did a major upgrade ~4 years ago

Hi everyone,
Just a quick update. I'm meeting with the Cary Audio folks the week after next to see if/how they'd like to be involved. After I meet with them, we can start to think about scheduling a meetup. I'm thinking end of March.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
James

We have an active group in central NC. We usually meet at my house near Holly Springs every 3-6 months. Next g2g is March 25th. PM me for directions.

See the "Carolina Audiophiles" circle on AudioCircle forum for event announcements. Most of the members in our group do not participate in forums anymore.
