I don't know if this is good or bad. My perception of Linear is that it's the last vestige of the cowboys who created Silicon Valley.
Hi Jack,

I really, really hope this does not happen. We need independent players like the folks at Linear Technology! Too much of the industry has been gobbled up buy TI ( for example) and LT drives serious competition to TI in power supply related areas!Analog Devices to buy Linear Tech

The german news already present it as a fact. Nearly 15 Billion $ in cash and shares. Combined sales of both companies ~5 Billion $ .

Excuuuuuse me. 😀 Unfortunately too many are retired or tragically dead too soon. I need to call Bob Dobkin to see what he thinks of this.

Just an outside observer. I read a lot of books since Tracy Kidder on "tech" and the perception is that Route 128 is much more oxford cloth/button down collar, narrow black tie than the philandering bourbon drinking, wife swappers and otherwise high-lifers of Silicon Valley.

An intelligent hell would be better than a stupid paradise, but possibly there's a third option.
I like bourbon, but prefer VO.
The stories of Shockley's awful management style leading to Fairchild's venture into semi's the split over to Nat Semi, etc. are the stuff of which a movie should be made. Only I would watch it.
I have, somewhere on this planet, some Raytheon friends ...

Now, the question is: which one is going to engulf/devour the other first, TI or AD?
It would be a ways off before Analog would get into position to acquire TI. TI would need to implode or divest.
I wouldn'd be surprised if there was a behind the scenes battle between TI and ADI for LT.
So ADI won.

TI got Burr Brown, ADI gets LLTC.
Just hoping that ADI continues to support LTSpice. (ADI had a dalliance with National Instruments "Multisim" ). My suspicion is that they will as it's probably more effective than print or web advertising in creating brand loyalty.

I'm not saying this because of the title of this thread but, its always worth saving a copy of any programs like LT. In other words have a copy tucked away that can be installed offline whether or not support still exists.
Charlie Sporck (prez NSC) wrote and self published a memoir called SPINOFF. Good read.

Given how brutal all things semiconductor are, it's not surprising to see such consolidation. We'll see how it ultimately shakes out. Lot of very excellent chips in both portfolios.

It's closer to "was" than "is" and is based mostly on long gone colorful characters.
some consider the relative unenforceability of non-compete agreements in Ca gave Silicon Valley a boost over Route 128 companies innovation rate
