Default What words or phrases in audio ads or reviews....

....tend to set off your BS detectors?

Sorry, I'm in a cranky mood tonight, after browsing on some review sites. Thought it might be interesting to see what kinds of wording bothers other people here. Not whole topics or arguments, just some ways things are presented that tend toward blowing the writer's credibility.

Here are some words that can make me think the writer is either making stuff up, stretching the truth, or maybe doesn't really know what he is talking about:
  • "Period." Written as if a complete sentence, meaning "discussion closed". Well, ok guy, go ahead, take your ball and go home. But wait.... it's not your ball! ...So discussion and even full-out disbelief can and probably will happen!
  • "Simply...". Similar to "Period.", and pretends an expertise that usually isn't in much evidence in the rest of the text. If you want to dispel doubt, do it with information, not by telling how simple it is to you (so we should be embarrassed to argue?)
  • " correct...". As an adjective describing how something is applied. Is there such a thing as being 'Audiophilically Correct'? If something has to be done one way to get what is described, better say what that is!
  • "...phase problems", seldom with any details. Sometimes with a description that seems to defy all evidence.

Please feel free to blow off steam and add more.....

Well, you know that "the ear" in more sensitive to the pitch and very seldom to phase.
The ears are making constantly, due to the symmetry and the special conformation of the skull ( we're not entering into endo-ossean sound transmission, aren't we ? ) , a phase analysis or time arrival comparation between the two sounds captioned.

Of course, in sound reproduction the phase can change considerably...from filters to [excess group delay]

Quantum. Coreherence. And quantum coherence, of course.

any reviewer that strings together adjectives in groups of two or more sets off the alarms

"...even my wife..."

(I admit, I'm guilty of this one. But in my case it was true )
