Here it is, all set up. It took my girlfriend approximately 10 seconds to throw halloween crap all over it.

Hey Storm,

It's certainly better to have your girlfriend "throw Halloween crap all over it, than have your girlfriend give you crap over your having them, right? Just think about all the poor guys here who have posted about having a wife or girlfriend who says they can't have the speakers because they:
  • don't match the décor

  • are too big

  • are ugly

  • are the wrong color

  • are not suitable for a family room

  • are not coming into my house

I have to admit to getting really upset every time I read that last comment in some guys post! Even if she pays all the bills it's not her house, it's their house. Heck even when the girlfriend or wife is a stay-at-home mom and the guy pays all the bills, she often still considers the place her house! I just don't understand why a guy would love a woman who could or would treat him like that. If his girlfriend or wife really loved him she'd want him to be happy too, wouldn't she? Is desiring some space, in one room, of an entire home, to setup an audio system really asking too much?

Perhaps she should talk with the girlfriend or wife of a guy who's hobby is to go out hunting, riding mountain bikes, camping, racing cars, fishing, riding motorcycles. At least listening to music is done at home. Plus once the kids go to bed, you can put on some romantic music, set out a plate of wine & cheese and listen to music together  Better yet she should talk with a woman who's man is out chasing woman, drinking :drink:  or doing drugs :hypno1:.

Sorry for this rant and the end of the list, but it's a sensitive subject for me. I'm glad your girlfriend is a keeper Storm! I'd help her place some of that Halloween crap on the speakers if I was you. Not only is it temporary, it means she not only accepts them but sees them as part of her (<<< a joke she obviously sees it as both yours and her) home...

^ I think someone hit a nerve. 😛

Howard how things on the other side of the pond? No a nerve wasn't hit, but a pet peeve was wiggled! I'm actually extremely lucky. I waited over 20 years after getting divorced to find the right woman for me. My wife is a Latina from Colombia, South America and like most women from Central & South America, she's very family-oriented. It really makes her happy to make me happy. In fact our arguments often start because we both want the other one choose where we're going to do eat or go! so they'll be happy. So when we go out to eat it's: "What do you want to eat?" "Oh I don't care what do you want to eat?" "I really don't care wherever you want to eat is fine" etc. etc. Then when the one of us won't choose the other gets frustrated and the argument starts. However even that ends quickly because one of will laugh that we are arguing about trying to make each other happy, then one of us will choose a place to go or eat.

Not being Americanized she views things as "ours". not as "hers" and she doesn't always want things to be her way. For example: When we went looking for houses she knew I would want our home to have a room I could make into a dedicated audio room. So from the very beginning that was on her list of "must haves!" In the end we purchased a 3 bedroom, 2 bath room home, that had a living room, family room, dining room and kitchen. All she asked was that I pick the room farthest from the master bedroom for my audio room. She asked that for two reasons:

  • The guys could enter that room directly by the side door. So there was less chance they'd make the house dirty.

  • If I listened to music after she went to bed it wouldn't disturb because it was the farthest room from her.

So the family room became my dedicated audio room. I've had my audio buddies over and we end up having a great time drinking a few Amber Bocks or Black & Tan Lagers, while listening to great music and talking audio. Before you know it, it's gotten late. In the meantime my wife will either be sitting in the living room with the TV muted and subtitles on, or else she'll go in our bedroom and shut the door. She never comes over and says "It's getting kind of late" "There's something I want to watch on TV" or "I have to go to work tomorrow" even if it's true! If she has to go to bed she'll just come over to the audio room, give me a kiss on the cheek and say goodnight to everyone and go to bed.

Obviously having such a wonderful person as my wife demands that I start considering her needs. I'll do that by turning the audio down a bit at a time over the next 2-3 songs and then after 2 or 3 more songs I'll say "I think we should call it a night guys. I know Martha won't say anything, but she really does have to get up early for work tomorrow, so I think we should let her sleep and not have to listen to more music." All my audio buddies love my wife and she makes them all feel very welcome. So everyone understands. I am truly a blessed man.

Oh I fully agree where you're coming from, and it sounds like you have a very understanding, compromising wife! And my girlfriend and I often have the same issues when choosing somewhere to eat 😀

I don't understand why many men seem so pistol-whipped by their partners in order to please them 200% of the time and not even dare to do anything that they enjoy. "Oh I can't put that speaker there, the wife won't let me. Oh I can't go out tonight, the wife won't let me. Oh I can't play GTA 5 for an hour, the wife would get upset." Just bloody get on with it FFS. Aren't relationships about compromise and give and take? If your partner truly has issues with you doing things that you like in this respect, despite you treating her right, then find another one.

I would understand the complaints, however, if the man was to quite literally fill their living room with piles of speakers and leave crap laying around. 😀

Awesome setup btw. Those tube components make me dribble.

See Howard we are in agreement. A relationship be it GF or wife should be 50/50. Too many guys get into relationships over a woman's looks, when they should be getting into a relationship with a woman who's compatible with their likes, dislikes & morals. When a guy woos a woman because of her great looks, he gets a woman who's used to men competing and falling all over themselves to make her happy. These women continue to expect the man she gets in a relationship with to want to fall over themselves to make her happy! Unfortunately this is the type of woman sees the house as being "hers" and expects to get her way.

After all to her you're just one of many guys who wanted her for her looks. So if you don't continue doing what you did while wooing her, she'll replace you! Sounds like Storm, you and I all have a great mates Howard! So we must have done something right in our search for a GF or wife. That said, I still feel very bad when I hear stories of guys who have "demanding" mates. Hence my earlier rant that you first responded to. Oh and thanks for your very nice comments about my audio system. It was and remains a work in progress that started over 40+ years ago when I was 13 and had my first audio system.

"Hers" is one reason I'm heading for the big D....

When we met she was happy to do the same things I like to do. Later she didn't want to be around my friends, then fussed if I wanted to be around my friends, blah, blah, blah...

The truly sad thing is that she really has no friends.

If that was all she put on the stereo I'd be elated.

Took me three tries. But my 3rd wife actually likes hanging out with Jan Didden, Scott Wurcer, Morgan Jones, Pete Millett, Variac, and... well, you get the idea.

She knows that she's supposed to spontaneously hear differences from the next room.

It took me 2x Sy! But after getting divorced in 1982, I waited 19 yeats before getting married again....

In my case it really was "her" house - she purchased it some months prior to our starting to date. (2nd wife) When I moved in she gave me a nice basement room for my stereo and other activities..

In a normal year we also host an audio get together for the club I belong to (this is not a normal year) and she manages all of the food, cleans up any disasters, and co-hosts. AND she enjoys it! (I should note it takes over the entire main floor of the house in addition to the man cave. Equipment everywhere, some fairly terrible music during equipment auditions, and she is everywhere at once helping and chatting with the guys.)

My system is complex, and not something easily (or perhaps ever) integrated into any decor. Eleven cubic foot Onken bass cabinets and piles of very utilitarian looking home brew tube electronics.

I'll post some new pix when I snag a camera from upstairs..

Here are some pix of my system and room as it currently exists. Today I am playing sacds.. You can see clearly why this system is not too generally friendly and needs its own room.. lol

Oddly enough this little basement room is the best sounding room I have ever had. Honestly speaking though the speakers and system in general were designed with the nature of the room in mind.

Power is provided by a pair of IT coupled GM70 SE amps, the line stage based on 26 dhts is also transformer coupled. Fixed bias is employed everywhere.
Available power is 20Wrms per channel, and with a speaker efficiency of over 100dB I can make some serious noise..

Women complain ...? 🙂

Ha , mine will actually help me lift in my double18's , the kids help out too and everyone has no issues sleeping with the music going. As to the wife , when choosing I'm a globalist , no American wife for me , personally you couldn't give me one ...🙂

Well unless she's mormon and have no issues with 3 others ..🙂

What you guys dont hang out with John ....🙂

My 1st try is my wife from Peru. She gets mad at me because I don't play music enough to suit her tastes! Yeeesh. 😀 The one time she hurt my feelings was when she asked me why my system doesn't sound like SY's. ouch And she likes SY and Jan and hasn't met Scott.

But she is very family oriented and our two little ones are big-hearted, have fun, and like to listen to music. Oh, and they get great marks in school.

She's a keeper for me!

The psychological differences between men and women are several orders of magnitude greater than the physiological differences.

Women instinctively know this from birth and use it to their advantage. Men only discover this fact after the age of 85.

Around 2000 or so I was on another of my wifes Sunday garage-sale drives, approaching her Parents place, there was a Garage sale just a few houses down. Approaching on foot there seemed little left, the Garage itself was bare, the remaining stuff littering the driveway. Since it was towards the end of the day, the Sun was making long shadows, the "seller" looked haggard. Perusing the stuff I saw a stack of blackfaced audio gear & a pricetag on the bottom of the stack.$35. I went white........Hearing the conversation in the distance, it was some engineering type who already had left town (Moved), leaving his wife to sell off the remaining stuff & hearing some grumbling about that she was running out of time & still had some stuff left-over.....what to do?
I nonchalantly shuffled back to my wife & nodded oh so carefully to the stack of "stuff"......showed her the $35 price-tag on the bottom piece, Carver TFM-15CB....we asked how much for all of it amp, pre, tuner. 'Well $35 for 'that'" And how much for these other two? "Oh, Ten here and Ten there".
We were up to a bank breaking $55....All this time I was tapping my wifes shoe with mine, along with "winks & "looks"".
A Carver TFM-15CB, Yamaha CX-800 pre-amp, Harmon Kardon TU911 tuner.
Maybe it was the loose tuning knob on the Tuner, or the Pre-amp remote with the gobs of cellophane tape wrapped around it, trying to keep the battery-door in place......yee gods, an engineer? seriously? Great acquisition.
Fast-forward to a few days ago, talking about sizes of speakers, I mentioned "refrigerator size"...no reaction.."as long as it rocks the house"
"I'll have to get out the measuring tape I guess.
