Default ears alone?

See BBC News - Sight dominates sound in music competition judging. Nice to know that it is not just audio journalists that judge sound with their eyes!

PS The link text above somehow picked up the page title, which did not appear to be in the URL string - how did that happen?
Saved me some typing , so I'm not complaining. Did this website pop over to the BBC and pick up the page title from there?

Why is that not surprising

What was surprising was that the only ones that correctly picked the winners (with statistical significance) were the ones that could not hear the performances. Now that is interesting!

Appearances are important. But what if the pianists had looked good, but were rotten players? Would they still have scored high in competition?

I have found that listening to music in a darkened room to remove visual cues often enhances realism. On the other hand, if it's a crappy performance or recording, the realism factor is utterly lost.

Then they go into pop or rock.

They do, they do.

"It's all about the music" they say - at the huge light, video and sound shows that pass as concerts these days. Really, it's all about the show.

True. But in order to get these expensive stage shows, they first have to get a record company to pick them up and back the tour. So talent does figure into it at the beginning of the process.

As far as rap goes, I'm not in the target audience so I'm in no position to judge who's talented and who isn't.

Not so much. It's the look, the attitude, the vibe. Inability to carry a tune is easy to fix these days.
