The researchers cant hear. 1,2 and 4 are basically the same sound, the nails on chalkboard is a terrible recording that dosnt sound like its supposed (or it would be higher on the list.) The others I couldnt listen to, but there are a thousand different baby crying (screaming) sounds, wonder what they used. (I bet I have more annoying ones in my SFX library).

Oh well, what do you expect from pop science.

1. Tooth drill machine
2. Wet finger on window glass
3. Singer processed through pitch correcting software and compression

currently: the metallic "clink' sound my MGB makes sometimes when pulling away from rest. I've spent hours reconditioning the drive train... All to no avail, and it now feels as if the car is taunting me...
