"Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" -- the same in English
"M"
"Clockwork Orange"
"Jaws"

don't want to offend the French, but I always think of Cocteau's "La Belle et La Bete" as a horror film. I saw it in film class at the Universitatis two score years ago and have given a half-dozen DVD's of it away as a graduation present! One of the best films ever made.

You're supposed to be scared watching an horror film. I don't know how "La Belle et La Bete" could scare anyone. A good film, yes; a horror film, no. Same thing with "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari", OK he's VERY ugly but apart from that....

Anyways, there's a line between horror FICTION films and, mimicking Kurtz here, "The horror... the horror..." films. Horror fiction films are for kids. But if you really want to be depressed about the horror inside human nature, there's nothing like "Shoah" by Claude Lanzmann.
