Default Kitchen remodel, audio?

I wasn't really sure where to post this so, apologies if it's in the wrong spot.

I'm finishing up a kitchen remodel and I have been trying to decide on how to best musicify (my own word, feel free to use it. haha) it.

I was originally going to put in-wall speakers on opposite corners of the room, build an Hlly amp fed by an Airport Express. I love how Airplay works but this solution seems overkill.

I then though something similar to the Beolit 12 or the Libratone would be good. But the price of those makes my eyes a bit blurry and I couldn't find a similar product that I liked. I do like the Geneva sound stuff but again, I'm pretty sure I could build something that sounds and looks better for quite a bit less.

Now I'm thinking about building my own 'Beolit'. It needs to be countertop sized, sound amazing and pass the wife test, meaning it should match the kitchen's white/brushed metal look.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all?
Thanks,
John

Hi , the Airport soulution (my own word, feel free to use it. haha)
might be good to minimize speaker cable length , as long cables
might cause strange oscillations in the amp , then destroying it .

If asked me , I would say to find an integrated amp or tuner + amp
in a thrift store , as I would never use a T-amp for music purposes .
Then a pair of little fullrange speakers , something like a Tang Band
W4-1320 SI , in little boxes and away from the wall . Or at least ,
about 5 inches away from it .

I like that you mentioned a full range as I had that in mind.
Can I ask you why you wouldn't use a t-amp? I thought it would be perfect for this application since it would make a small, clean amp. Since the kitchen will be a social area I'm looking for 'really good' sound that is simple and easy to use.

I really like the TDK Cube, wish I could 1. find it here and 2. get it in white or silver.

BUT, from one of your links I like the design of THIS for a fullrange.
The problem I've run into before with musicifying different rooms is that speaker placement is fairly difficult in that all the guests' ears are not going to be on the same plane. While some people will have music shooting straight into their ears others will either be above or below. It seems that slightly below everyone's ears would be a better placement.
