On the B-17 ball turret : That is the last place I would want to be on that plane. On the B-24 the ball turret was retractable so you wouldn't have to be in it while landing but on the 17 you were in it from before take-off until after landing if any part of the turret control system was damaged. A lot of guys got stuck ion them. Just imagine if the landing gear did not come down.

More tail gunners were killed than any other position on the B-17s and B-24s though. It is a matter of closing speed. When attacked from the front the two planes pass each other really fast but when the attacker is coming up from behind you are in their gunsights for a lot longer time. Attacking a bomber from behind is the same deal for the attacker too. Much more dangerous then attacking from the front or side unless the tail gunner has already been killed.

And some people forget that our bombers had .50 cal machine guns (12.7mm for you Canadians) and the German fighters had cannons that were more powerful and could shoot much farther. Why our bombers didn't have cannons I do not know. Maybe it was a matter of producing huge numbers in a short period of time.

It's true whether you believe it or not. Actually, some people die almost instantly. Dying isn't too much of a problem. Being sick and depressed before dying is what scares me.

The germans eventually used 30mm cannons which were very effective (4 hits on average to down a B17 or B24, a single hit for a fighter. The previous 20mm required an average of 25 hits to down a bomber.) plus easy and cheap to produce as 80% of it was stamped steel.
The drawback was low ballistic properties so the german fighters had to close in very tightly before firing.
ME262 pilots did run a very real risk of colliding with the target due to the speed differential and the need to get very close.

We have over 200,000 in Texas and they are taking over the whole country and even moving into Canada. Feral Hogs start out being regular farm pigs (pink almost bald guys with curly tails and no tusks) who escape. Within a few years the very same pigs are covered with hair and have big tusks and will kill you. If you have never encountered a wild hog you probably don't believe me but if you have you know I am telling the truth. They will kill you. Their children are even more aggressive and wild looking but you don't have to wait for that. The very same ones who escape make the transition remarkably fast.

An 11 year old kid in Alabama killed a nearly 1100 pound wild hog a few years ago. The hogs head was as big as the kid. Scientists later examined and verified the hog as being a domestic pig who for whatever reason left the farm and went wild. You may have heard of Hogzilla who was a 1000 pound hog killed in Georgia that was photographed but not examined by scientists at the time. Well I think the one that the kid killed pretty much supports Hogzilla being for real. They did later dig up hogzillas body and the scientists think he was more like 800 pounds based on his skeleton. But a 150 pound wild hog will kill you so arguing about 800 vs 1000 is pointless.

They are by far the most dangerous wild animal in Texas. No contest. We have a small number of bears too but I would rather run into one of them than a wild hog if I were unarmed.
We don't have 1100 pounders , but the smoky mountain park is FILLED with wild russian boars. The friendly bears are NOTHING , the boars have a nasty attitude. You just look for sign (holes everywhere) and stay away. They are TOUGH , I had to shoot one in the head twice to stop it , the rangers usually shoot 1-2 in my valley as well every summer to keep the city people safe. One good thing (maybe) is that you can use the boar as you would a "standard" pig (smoked bacon ) .

Too much shooting going on, keep it civil guys! I'm having my breakfast, don't feel like reading about shooting down animals -no matter how wild they might be.

So if there is bacon in your breakfast do you assume the pig who provided it died peacefully?

I read an interview with Rolling Stone Keith Richards who has had enough overdoses that he should be dead.
He said that there is no light at the end of a tunnel, no floating up to heaven, no choirs, just a' fade to black'.
