This Wired article has a neat list of how humans can cause quakes: Top 5 Ways to Cause a Man-Made Earthquake | Wired Science | Wired.com

As far as the USA, or anyone, popping off nuclear bombs to cause the Haiti quake... Logistically, how do you get anything, nuclear or otherwise, 8.5 miles underground along an inland slip faultline? The epicenter of the 7.0 quake in Haiti was eight miles below the surface of the island. Drilling eight miles deep in a tectonically benign region requires immense time, money, labor and equipment; to burrow that deep into an active continental fault like the one in Haiti would mean contending with temperatures and pressures the likes of which I doubt have ever been encountered in a drilling project. To quietly plant bombs that deep in a heavily populated region? The USA would have an easier time quietly overthrowing Iran.

Is anyone on here really suggesting there's a human hand behind a terrible seismic event that killed a quarter of a million people?

You guys who live on the North Island of New Zealand had better watch out especially in the Bay of Plenty area.

I did a job a couple of years ago trying to image the fault which extents in a north-east direction from Cape Runaway.
It has not moved in over 30 years - nothing - complared with continual activity on the North island and further out to sea. In other words, it has stuck!

When it does go, the government expect the Bay of Plenty to vanish! A disaster worse than Napier in the '30s.

.

ouch, is it certain to end badly, or can it come unstuck without tragedy? Wellington is the most earthquake paranoid town youll find.
