Back at the end of October SY wrote about loud live music.
The loudest I have heard was Deep Purple at their reunion gig just outside London UK. Mind you the Moody Blues could make a lot of noise at the (indoor) WEmbly stadium. Their guest at that charity gig was Brian Wilson. I got backstage afterwards and Wilson - this was his first appearance after his long "break" from performing - was beside me at the bar.....we spoke for about 5 minutes. He is a truly nice guy. BUT is he BIG? About 6'5/6""! |

Saw Moody Blues (77/78 as in 19) in Columbia SC, USA at the Coliseum at USC. Yes it was LOUD. Saw Joe Satriani in a club(Pteradactyl Club Charlotte NC early 90's) smaller than my house, my ears are still ringing .
What was that you said... Elwood

The loudest I've heard were the Ramones by quite a margin (thankfully).
After the gig I could not hear anything for two hours, which was scary. Later on that tour their pa actually caused a black out in Nice. |

It probably wasn't the first (as any number of bush bands probably were seen when I was a kid Tallowood bush band is the only one I can remember though, mainly because my bottletop collection was used on their largerphone) but the first rock band I saw live was Mental as Anything in the great hall at the NSW Institute of Technology (before it was UTS). I'm pretty sure that was the first, the other possibility would be "the radiators" at the Coffs Harbour civic centre

I haven't been to too many shows recently. They have become too expensive and my hearing has been damaged enough in the past, but last night I went to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra. I have been listening to their music for several years. They have been doing shows at an NHL arena about a mile from my house every year but I have never had the time or money to go. Each year I get to hear how good the show was from my friends, so this time Sherri and I went. TSO was formed about 10 years ago my some metal head guitar players, but most of their music is Christmas themed and their tours are always in the winter. The first half of the show is a narrated Christmas story punctuated by music ranging from mellow to metal. Major visual cues come from about a million LEDs forming 17 video screens and a background that is built on a mechanical support structure that is in motion constantly through out the show. The second half of the show is a full blown rock show where the music and the visuals are intensified. Lasers and pyro are added. On one epic song the performers are running through the crowd while playing. The lead guitar and violin players wind up on a small platform that "blasts off" and levitates over the crowd while the whole arena is filled with lasers, lights and pyro. They were even tied into the arenas display system which allowed for simulated lightning bolts zapping over the crowds heads. I like shows like this and I put this one in my top five along with Metallicas "Load" tour and Pink Floyds "Pulse" tour. Camera phone pictures do not capture the effect very well and won't capture the pyro at all:

Hmmm..... Wife and Sister-in-Law caught the show in Nashville last year and regarded is as $100 down the drain. I think the 2nd string team showed up for that show - or perhaps they were saving their energy for the next gig. Maybe they have redone the set's and play-list's and came up with a better show this tour?

I have noticed both last year and on this curent tour there are two simultaneous TSO shows in two different cities. Last night they were here in Sunrise Florida at 8PM (show started at about 8:15 and went to 11PM) AND there was a TSO show in San Diego at 8PM (11PM here). Unless that flying stage has time travel capabilities there must be TWO different TSO's. During intermission they introduced each performer that was on stage (about 20). It would be interesting to see if the same names were used in each show. Is it possible that the two shows are not the same? We got there early to avoid the impending rain, so I spent some time checking out the hardware. I was thinking that this set was rather complicated and probably required some considerable set up and tear down time. I imagine that some of the stuff must be venue specific especially the tie in to the arena's scrolling LED display that circles the entire arena. It is not uncommon for a rock tour to have two complete sets to allow for shows on every evening. In this case there must be 4.
