Have you seen the documentary "Crumb"? He's totally nuts, but truly a genius.

Cool, I've seen it. I didn't know Robert Hughes offered his endorsement. RH is one of the few Normils that I admire.

There is a "coffee table" book set of Zap Comix -- discussed in this morning's New York Times -- http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/02/ar...boxed-set.html

I think that the proto-stoners working the library at Universitatits Bronxiensis subscribed. They also had Playboy, but you had to ask the reference librarian for the much pawed over copy. (Jebbies probably got it first).
