Granted they are not
 over used and in thier proper context dead:  smilies can be a source of both amusing and subtle but complex visual discoursehowever I do not understand what this is  what is this? why is he smashing a hammer? is he fighting? If he is fighting why is he smiling? Who made this up? sorry Answers would greatly clear up this matter |

It accentuates your point in a testosterone sort of way, Similar to banging your fist on the table to make a point but with a positive side, like when cheering for your team.
