You can get a core and coil ballast on Ebay for the Ushio for $30. I did it, and it came incredibly quickly. It was a snap to wire (although mounting it in my setup took me a bit, not to mention it weights 16 lbs), makes almost no noise (with any fan, you can't hear it, when I had my fan off, I believe I could hear the ballast from about 2 feet away, no farther, and I have great hearing), and most of all, works with the Ushio. That said, the downside of it is that if Ushio discontinues the S400DD, I might have no lamp alternatives (I personally don't know of any other metal halide retrofits that are inexpensive and of the type we want), and would be forced to go with HPS (no chance) or buy a new ballast. That said, if Ushio really were to discontinue the S400DD, I would be down only the price of the ballast, $30.
Weigh the options. |

If your going to keep the lamp and sell the ballast i would be interested in the ballast. What part of Canada are you form?
By the way i don't think Ushio is discontinuing the bulb they just redesigned it. The new design is about 2cm longer which seems to be the only difference. Clinton |
